At MCCPS, we are proud to offer a vibrant music program where students’ creativity and musicianship can flourish. Every student participates in two 45-minute general music classes each week, engaging in activities that include learning to read and compose music, playing instruments, and exploring a variety of musical styles. Students often take additional music opportunities, including MCCPS Chorus, Honors Band, Jazz Combo, Rock Band, Strings, and musicals. Weekly performances, such as Music Morning, and showcase events like Exhibition and Music Extravaganza allow students to share their talents and growth.
Our curriculum is designed to build musical skills progressively:
- Grades 4–5: Students sing, play piano, learn a concert band instrument, compose, arrange music, and explore music history and theory.
- Grade 6: Students study blues, create original compositions, perform in blues bands, participate in Drums Alive, and produce music for projects integrating other subjects.
- Grade 7: Students practice ukulele, form bands, compose scores for original films, and explore music theory, film music, and diverse musical eras.
- Grade 8: Students perform on guitar or ukulele, study jazz and contemporary music, arrange and compose pieces, and participate in band and ensemble performances.
Through these experiences, MCCPS students develop technical skills, creative expression, and confidence as performers, all within a supportive and engaging musical community.
The MCCPS music program is led by Adria Murrelle Smith, a Grammy-nominated music educator with 25 years of experience at MCCPS and recognized as one of “50 Directors Who Make a Difference” by SBO magazine. A lifelong musician and composer, Adria has had her works performed by the Peabody Trio and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and her jazz recordings feature legendary drummer Clyde Stubblefield. She has earned numerous grants to enhance music education at the school. A Berklee College of Music scholarship recipient with a Master’s in Music Education, Adria is an accomplished performer, passionate about jazz improvisation, technology in music, and project-based learning that empowers students to explore their creativity.
Theatre at MCCPS
North Shore Children's Theatre is proud to partner with Marblehead Community Charter Public School to produce two plays each school year. Through weekly rehearsals, actors and crew members not only learn theatrical techniques but also gain self confidence and learn to work as a team. Some of our past productions include: Peter Pan, You’re a God Man Charlie Brown, and Wizard of Oz.
