Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees is the governing authority for MCCPS, in accordance with the state law establishing charter schools (MGL Chapter 70, §89). The Board of Trustees holds the Charter from the state and is responsible for ensuring that the policies of the School: (a) comply with all applicable laws and regulations; and (b) ensure that the school is an academic success, organizationally viable, faithful to the terms of its charter, and earns charter renewal.

Meet Our Board Members

  • Katie is a proud MCCPS parent and  joined the MCCPS Board in 2022 after observing her child thrive at the school.  A lawyer by trade, Katie spent over a decade in federal service, regulating and overseeing Medicaid programs throughout New England and the greater Southeast United States. Katie lives in Swampscott with her family and is active in local vocal ensembles.

  • Lindsay is a parent of a MCCPS 6th grader who walks to school in Marblehead.  She is a career middle school teacher in both public and private settings, and has long been passionate about charter schools and progressive public education. Outside of the classroom, she was the director of college success at College Track and The Harlem Children’s Zone serving intentionally under-resourced students and their families.   She is deeply passionate about and committed to bolstering diversity, equity and inclusion programs in all of our schools.  She holds a BA in Civil Rights from Brown University, a Masters in Education from Tufts and did her teacher training program at Shady Hill School in Cambridge.  She is also on the executive board of the Marblehead Racial Justice team leading youth engagement.    She loves being outside, listening to live music and hanging with her 3 daughters (and their dad) as they prepare to save the planet.

  • Ian is a biomedical research scientist. He has a Ph.D in molecular and cellular biology and has over 25 years academic and industrial biomedical research experience. He has worked in the UK, Bay Area and Cambridge, MA. Most recently Ian has worked with Human Resources and the Office of the President at the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research to develop strategies to support and develop its innovation and global talent pipeline. Ian has a long standing interest in strengthening science and engineering curricula in schools, in particular around encouraging greater gender and diversity representation in biology and chemistry.  He is the parent of two MCCPS alumni students and has been a Marblehead resident for 18 years.

  • Ellen recently retired after 50 years of teaching. She has a BA in Anthropology from Brandeis University and an MEd in Science from Boston University. During her career she taught math, science, art, and was an assistant principal. The last 10 years of her career was spent happily at MCCPS as the 8th grade math and science teacher. Her pride in this gem of a school continues to motivate her to volunteer. She has lived with her husband Larry in Marblehead for over 30 years. Her passions include her family, calligraphy and illumination, needle crafts, and cooking. She also volunteers at her synagogue by managing their cemetery, baking for events, and teaching cooking classes.

  • Kim Nothnagel comes to the MCCPS Board as a parent of 2 Charter students, PTO member, and enthusiastic supporter of and participant in the community service learning program.  In her professional life, she stays busy trying to save the world, one volunteer at a time at SPUR, a local non-profit.  She holds a BA from the Johns Hopkins University.  Kim is committed to ensuring that Charter remains a place that cultivates not just great students, but great humans.

  • Chris is the parent of three MCCPS 5th graders and commutes with his family from Peabody. For the past fifteen years, he has worked in the EdTech space as a program manager and team leader, helping authors and publishers deliver textbooks and courseware through ereaders, print, and LMS integrations for both HigherEd and K–12 programs.  Chris holds a BA in Media Arts from Emerson College and an MBA from Southern New Hampshire University. He enjoys nothing more than an evening of music, board games, and charcuterie with his wife and five daughters.

  • Polly is a proud parent of two MCCPS students. Polly joined the Board of Trustees after coming to fully appreciate the positive impact that the MCCPS philosophy and its project-based learning had on her children. Professionally, Polly is a practicing attorney focused primarily on representing children and families in the Juvenile and Probate and Family Courts. Having also previously served various roles in local government bodies and boards of non-profit organizations, Polly seeks to use her skillset to give back to MCCPS and its wonderful community of teachers, students and families.

  • Rachel March previously taught at MCCPS for 4 years as a 4th grade inclusion teacher. She recently had to transfer due to her location, but continues to teach as a Special Education Inclusion teacher. She holds a BSE in Elementary Education, a BA in Geological Sciences, and an MEd. in Special Education for Moderate to Mild Disabilities. She is passionate about the inclusion of students with disabilities and varied linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Rachel currently lives in Boston with her fiance. 

  • Karen is a dedicated educator with over 25 years of experience in special education. She has taught in a variety of settings, including spending four years as an inclusion specialist at MCCPS. Karen holds a Master’s degree in Moderate Special Needs from Lesley University and a Bachelor's in Psychology from Merrimack College. Passionate about fostering inclusive educational environments, Karen is committed to enhancing the learning experience for all learners. After retiring, Karen spends her time volunteering in the community. She volunteers with the MSPCA at the Northeast Animal Shelter, supporting animal care and adoption efforts. She also assists with her family’s charitable trust, which focuses on addressing community needs throughout the Merrimack Valley.

Additional Information

The Board of Trustees is a public entity and conducts all meetings in accordance with the Massachusetts Open Meeting Law (MGL Chapter 30A, Section 11A 1/2). Trustees serve three-year terms and can serve no more than three consecutive three-year terms. Trustee candidates are nominated to the Board by the Governance Committee of the Board. The Board then approves candidates as Trustees and forwards their approval to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for final approval. Trustees only take office upon the final approval of the State.

The Trustees rights and responsibilities are detailed in the By Laws, and all Trustees rights and responsibilities are identical regardless of appointment class.

The Board has four officer positions - Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, and Clerk - each with specific responsibilities detailed in the MCCPS By Laws.  Trustees cannot serve more than three consecutive terms in the same office. The School's Chief Staff Person is prohibited from serving as an officer. Further, a Trustee who is a member of the Faculty or Staff is prohibited from serving as Board Chair or Treasurer.

Provisional members have been approved as Trustees by the MCCPS Board of Trustees and are pending approval by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. By action of the Board, Provisional members are invited to all Board meetings and activities while their approval is pending. They are entitled to participate as provisional Trustees and to participate in all activities and discussions, but are not be permitted to vote on any matter until they receive formal approval from the Department of Education, and will not be counted when determining a quorum.
