The Marblehead Community Charter Public School is the first school in the country to implement a system of professional development that empowers teachers to lead school improvement efforts. This system, known as Leerkracht (Translation from Dutch: Teaching Force) is now in place at nearly 1000 schools in the Netherlands.
We are working with a consultant to train our teachers on the Teaching Force system that includes weekly meetings where teachers collaboratively design lessons and then observe one another throughout the week to provide feedback on the implementation of the lesson and instructional practices. Students are also trained to provide feedback to teachers.
In October we had our first student arena where 12 of our current students shared with our faculty their thoughts on what makes a great teacher, how they best learn, and suggestions for how we can improve. We then take the student feedback and craft goals to address these suggestions for improvement.
