Hello From Nature's Classroom 2010

Hello from Nature's Classroom. The sixth graders have settled in and are having a ton of fun. The food is good, the teachers are nice, and the beds are soft enough. Your children have been busy learning about trees, plants, and animals (some even saw a porcupine). We have also enjoyed hiking, building water rockets, singing, dissecting a pig, playing tag, building structures, and completing challenges as a team. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students became insects, frogs and snakes and played a huge game of predator and prey. Teachers and students created their own cultures and became anthropologists to learn about each other's cultures; waakaa waakaa choo choo(ed. note ???). Other highlights included natural facials, edible plants, fire building, more singing, and cake in Ms. Dunne's face. Having a great time! Hope you are not missing us too much. Check the MCCPS website for updated pictures throughout the week. See you on Friday around 2pm.-The Sixth Grade Team

THE BOSTON POPS ANNOUNCES STUDENT ART CONTEST
AS PART OF 125TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON CELEBRATION

BOSTON POPS INVITES STUDENTS THROUGHOUT MASSACHUSETTS TO CREATE ORIGINAL ART PIECES TO BE DISPLAYED ON SCREENS IN SYMPHONY HALL DURING THE SEASON

The Boston Pops announces an art contest as part of a season-long celebration of its 125th anniversary season, May 4-June 20.  Using the general theme of music as their inspiration, Massachusetts students, grades K through 12, are invited to submit an original drawing or painting to the Boston Pops Student Art Contest. Ten winners will be chosen to have their artwork displayed on screens in Symphony Hall during the Pops 125th season and on bostonpops.org (full contest description below).  Subjects can range from literal representations of the Boston Pops on the Esplanade for their famous Fourth-of-July concert or in Symphony Hall for their spring or Holiday season concerts, to something more abstract, not at all directly related to the Pops—something more personal that represents what music means to the individual student.
All entrants will receive a subscription to the Pops online digital music store with access to all Pops digital recordings. A judging panel including Keith Lockhart and representatives from the Boston Pops will select 10 Grand Prize winners, who will be given four tickets to a Pops concert during June 2010, with an opportunity to visit back stage and meet the conductor following the performance.
All entries must be original artwork and the work of the student contestant.  Artwork must be in one of the following forms: drawing/sketch (charcoal or pencil), painting (oils or watercolor), or a design created with an art software program, or photography.  Artwork must be at least 3” by 5” and no larger than 30” x 50”.  All entries should be mailed to Boston Pops Art Contest, 301 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston MA  02115, and should include the artist’s name, age, grade, and school on the back of the artwork.   Entries must be received by Friday, May 14. Winners will be notified by Friday, May 28.
