Trimester One-5th Grade Medieval Faire

Essential Question: Who had the power in Medieval Society?

Project Description: Students will re-create a medieval faire that reflects their understanding of feudalism and the different social classes that existed in the middle ages.

Each student will assume the role of a member of medieval society and demonstratehis/her knowledge and understanding of medieval life by:

  • Creating two artifacts/tools that represent his or her position in the community
  • Dressing in clothing that reflects his or her status
  • Designing and constructing a sign that displays his or her craft or trade
  • Writing a personal narrative describing who he or she is
  • Illuminating the first letter of the narrative in the tradition of a medieval manuscript
  • Speaking about his/her role, sign, dress, and position in medieval society
  • Composing and singing medieval music
  • Generating, solving and teaching a mathematical word problem that could have been encountered in the middle ages

Medieval Chronicle:Students will write a three paragraph narrative from the perspective of a medieval character answering the questions, Who am I? What do I do? How do I live?

A Guide to Medieval Times: Students will research and write an article about one aspect of life (historical people, architecture, Crusades, warfare, etc.) in the middle ages.
